The Use of Limewash

Limewash is a traditional permeable paint for use on porous building materials such as lime plaster, lime render, limestone and soft brick. It is a thin dilution of non-hydraulic lime, water, and alkali-fast powder pigments. Exterior grade limewash contains biocides and additional binders – casein, tallow or linseed oil– to improve rain-shedding and durability. Pure Lime wash is normally reserved for internal use. Casein Bound Lime wash is an
exterior grade that is often also used internally as it is less likely to rub off, and Tallow Bound Lime wash is an exterior grade rarely used internally.
Limewash can be applied to newly applied lime plaster and render before it has fully carbonated as the permeable lime wash does not impede the carbonation of the plaster beneath. Lime wash, due to the thin consistency, can be ‘messy’ to apply and protections must be provided. Special care must be taken if oak is present as it is permanently stained by lime. Lime is alkali and can cause serious eye damage and suitable protective clothing and full-face protection must be worn. Applying lime wash to ceilings is particularly hazardous, and soft distemper is often preferred for the decoration of ceilings. Indeed, distempers are often used in preference to lime wash for the internal decoration of walls and ceilings. Lime wash can only be applied to previously painted surfaces if the existing paint is lime wash, and should not be applied to previously distemper or emulsion painted surfaces. 

PREPARATION
Lime washes require a surface that is firm, clean, and porous. Remove all loose material and dirt and previously lime washed surfaces should be thoroughly soft-brushed and washed with a wet sponge to remove dust, dirt and all loose chalky material that is removed readily. Any algae or mould must be treated with an algaecide or fungicide and thoroughly washed off with clean water. Do not use proprietary fungicides containing water repellents. Make good and fill with a compatible lime filler. Lime wash must be applied to a damp surface. Lime plaster and render, porous
stone and brick must be thoroughly moistened with a mist spray prior to application.

Traditional Paints Lime wash & Distemper

Lime wash and Distemper have a beauty hard to match with modern paints. They possess softness of texture and purity of colour lacking from their modern equivalents. They are based on natural binders, fillers, and earth and mineral powder pigments and are characterised by a lack of uniformity with subtle variations of colour and tone. Lime wash and Distemper are vapour permeable and allow the building to‘breathe’ and are therefore suitable for use in traditional buildings, and particularly appropriate for the decoration of porous building materials – lime plasters and renders, limestone, soft brick, cobs and daubs. When properly applied to appropriate surfaces, they do not dry with a powdery finish and do not readily brush off on clothes. Traditional paints are made with natural sustainable ingredients and are environmentally friendly products containing no VOCs, lead, or petrochemical based ingredients. Limewashes are used both internally and externally. When used externally, casein or tallow is added to improve the ‘water-shedding’ properties. Casein, a natural glue derived from milk, improves adhesion and Casein Lime wash is also used internally on less porous hydraulic lime plasters and masonry. It is also less likely to rub off than Pure Lime wash.

Lime washes can only be applied to previously painted surfaces if the existing paint is lime wash. They should not be applied to previously distemper or emulsion painted surfaces. Distempers are matt finish water-based paints for internal use only. Three types are available – Soft Distemper, Casein Distemper, and Oil-bound Distemper. Soft Distemper is the most permeable of the three and normally used on ceilings and moulded plasterwork. It is used on walls, but generally in ‘low-usage’ areas, as it
can be washed off with a wet sponge. Casein Distemper and Oil-bound Distemper are normally used on walls as they are more hard-wearing and more difficult to wash off. Oil-bound Distemper, the least permeable of the three, should not be applied to new lime plaster as there is a potential reaction between the linseed oil and uncarbonated alkali lime. Oil-bound Distemper is the least uniform with the most tonal variation.
Distempers are normally applied to porous building surfaces but will also adhere to modern gypsum plaster and previously emulsion painted surfaces.

Face and eye protection and overalls must be worn and applying lime wash to ceilings is particularly hazardous and for this reason a distemper is often chosen for the decoration of ceilings. Indeed, many choose to use distemper in preference to lime wash for the internal decoration of walls and ceilings. Distempers are available in all our colours, and most colours are available in lime wash. Pigments can be supplied separately for those wishing to mix their own colours. We produce modern paint types for situations where lime wash and distemper are not suitable. These include permeable emulsion paint, oil paints and non-permeable vinyl and exterior grade emulsions. These modern paints retain much of the variety of colour and tone of the traditional as the same powder pigments
are used in all paints.

Storage:
Store upright in original containers in cool environment. Protect from heat and frost. Limited 3 month shelf life. Dispose of after expiry of shelf life.
Precautionary Statements:
P102: Keep out of reach of children.

P305 + P351 + P310: If in eyes rinse cautiously with water for several minutes and immediately get medical assistance.
P302 + P352: If on skin, wash affected parts immediately with soap and water.

Protective Measures:
Suitable protective clothing is essential.
Eye Protection: Goggles/face protection designed to protect against liquid splashes.
Emergency First Aid:
Oral Ingestion: Wash mouth with water and drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
Eye contact: SPEED IS ESSENTIAL. Irrigate immediately with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately. May cause serious damage to eyes if left untreated.

Skin Contact: Immediately wash with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove
contaminated clothing and launder before re-use. Seek medical attention if
irritation persists. May cause dermatitis or alkaline burns.

Spills:
Non-flammable. Lime wash on floor can be a slipping hazard.
Disposal:
Dispose of as non-toxic waste through a reputable disposal contractor. Do not allow to enter drains or water-courses.
